Musical upbringing
Trumpet and keyboardist, Sebastian Gil, was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He grew up in a musical family, which was the entirety of his early musical education .
His father, Mariano Gil, flautist and saxophonist, introduced him to many jazz records which he fell in love with in his early teens. He then pushed him to jump into various playing situations early on, encouraging improvising by ear. He also taught Sebastian the fundamentals of music theory and harmony. By the time he entered music classes in highschool, Sebastian already knew all the basic harmony concepts inside and out and gained a notoriety among his classmates for being able to recognize any chord voicing by ear.
His uncle, Ben Street, world renowned jazz bass player, noticed Sebastian’s excitement and talent for music early on and also brought him into various playing situations with professional musicians. He also brought Sebastian along to many concerts to watch and spend time around master musicians such as Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Bill Frisell.
